Hellinger distance
In this lecture, we will introduce a new notion of distance between probability distributions called Hellinger distance. Using some of the nice properties of this distance, we will generalize the fooling set argument for deterministic protocols to the randomized setting. We will then use this to prove a Ω(n) lower bound for the communication complexity of Disjointness. We will also see how this...
متن کاملHighly Informative Priors
SUMMARY After discussing the role of prior information in statistical inference, historically and in current problems, we analyze the problem of seasonal adjustment i n economics. Litterman 1980 has shown how informative priors for autoregressive coeecients can improve economic forecasts. We nd that in seasonal adjustment informative priors can have a m uch greater eeect on our conclusions. In ...
متن کاملHellinger distance for fuzzy measures
Hellinger distance is a distance between two additive measures defined in terms of the RadonNikodym derivative of these two measures. This measure proposed in 1909 has been used in a large variety of contexts. In this paper we define an analogous measure for fuzzy measures. We discuss them for distorted probabilities and give two examples.
متن کاملA Comparison of Non-informative Priors for Bayesian Networks
We consider Bayesian and information-theoretic approaches for determining non-informative prior distributions in a parametric model family. The information-theoretic approaches are based on the recently modiied deenition of stochastic complexity by Rissanen, and on the Minimum Message Length (MML) approach by Wallace. The Bayesian alternatives include the uniform prior, and various equivalent s...
متن کاملNetwork inference using informative priors.
Recent years have seen much interest in the study of systems characterized by multiple interacting components. A class of statistical models called graphical models, in which graphs are used to represent probabilistic relationships between variables, provides a framework for formal inference regarding such systems. In many settings, the object of inference is the network structure itself. This ...
